Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
A highly accessible, simple fertility treatment designed to maximize the likelihood of natural conception by assisting sperm delivery.
What Is Intrauterine Insemination?
IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a comparatively simple and minimally invasive fertility treatment that can be performed with or without fertility drugs.
The procedure involves placing laboratory-processed semen, containing highly motile sperm, directly through the cervix and into the uterine cavity right around the time of ovulation. This drastically maximizes the likelihood of conception by giving the sperm a "head start."
Eligibility for IUI Treatment
- Mandatory confirmation of ovulation (with or without medication).
- At least one open (patent) fallopian tube.
- A normal or only mild-to-moderately decreased sperm count.

Who Needs IUI?
IUI is widely recommended for a variety of patients seeking to build their families through assisted reproduction.
A "Pocket-Friendly" Treatment
IUI is highly affordable compared to IVF.
Unexplained Infertility
Often the first line of treatment for couples with unexplained fertility challenges.
Mild Male Factor
For male partners having minor semen abnormalities, low motility, or ejaculatory dysfunction.
Preserved Sperm
Couples utilizing frozen sperm obtained prior to surgery, travel, or medical treatments.
Single Women & LGBT
Ideal for single women or same-sex couples looking to conceive utilizing healthy donor sperm.
How Does IUI Work?
The IUI procedure is fast, practically painless, and requires zero downtime. Here is what you can expect on the day of your treatment.
Ovarian Stimulation (Optional)
Medication may be taken prior to the procedure to stimulate the ovaries, increasing egg production and making the woman more fertile than she would be in a natural cycle.
Semen Collection & Washing
The male partner provides a semen sample 1-2 hours before insemination. The semen is rigorously "washed" in our lab to separate healthy, motile sperm from the seminal fluid, preventing uterine irritation.
The Insemination
The process takes only a few minutes. A fertility specialist gently places a speculum inside the vagina and inserts a small, flexible catheter through the cervix directly into the uterine cavity.
Direct Delivery
The highly concentrated, washed sperm is injected through the catheter. This bypasses the cervical opening, allowing the sperm to swim directly to the egg with ease. The procedure is painless and requires no downtime.
IUI vs. IVF
While both are highly effective assisted reproductive technologies, the fundamental science behind how fertilization occurs is completely different.
IUI (Insemination)
The sperm is placed directly into the uterus, but fertilization still happens naturally inside the woman's body. We simply assist by placing the sperm closer to the egg.
IVF (In Vitro)
Eggs are surgically retrieved from the ovaries. Fertilization occurs in an embryology laboratory outside the body, and the resulting embryo is later transferred back into the uterus.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can an IUI cycle improve my chances of pregnancy?
Since the concentrated, highly motile sperm is placed directly inside the uterus, it bypasses cervical mucus barriers and is placed much closer to the site of fertilization. This is especially helpful when sperm count or mobility is slightly low.
How soon can I know if this treatment was successful?
Success can be confirmed in just 2 weeks. If you become pregnant, you will likely miss your next biological cycle, at which point a simple blood test at our clinic will officially confirm the pregnancy.
What is the chance of having Twins or Triplets?
If you are on ovary-stimulating medication prior to your IUI procedure, your body may release more than one egg. In cases involving stimulating drugs alongside IUI, the chance of multiple pregnancies (twins/triplets) can increase significantly.
How many cycles of IUI do I need to become pregnant?
If a woman does not conceive after her first IUI cycle, the procedure is often repeated. However, upon further evaluation, if a patient does not achieve pregnancy after 3 to 4 IUI cycles, our specialists may recommend transitioning to IVF treatment.
