Everything You Need to Know About ICSI
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a highly specialized form of IVF designed to overcome severe male infertility factors and repeated fertilization failures.
What is ICSI Treatment?
Infertility is a highly common hurdle. It is defined as the inability of a couple to become pregnant after one year of regular, unprotected intercourse. Approximately 20-30% of couples throughout the world face infertility issues, with over 56% of those couples requiring medical treatment.
The ICSI Breakthrough
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is an extensive and specialized extension of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). Instead of mixing thousands of sperm with an egg, our embryologist meticulously selects a single, healthy sperm and injects it directly into the center of the egg.
This revolutionary technique is used most commonly in cases of extreme male infertility, after repeated failed fertilization attempts with conventional IVF, or when utilizing frozen eggs.

Who Needs to Have ICSI?
Our fertility doctors specifically recommend ICSI treatment to couples facing the following clinical challenges:
Low Sperm Count
Recommended for males diagnosed with severe oligospermia (very low sperm count).
Poor Morphology or Motility
When sperm are abnormally shaped or have poor movement, preventing natural egg penetration.
Previous Failed IVF
For couples who have already tried conventional IVF but experienced very low or zero fertilization rates.
Frozen or Extracted Sperm
When utilizing surgically extracted sperm (from the testicle/epididymis) or lower-quality frozen sperm.
Genetic Testing (PGT)
Required when conducting embryo testing to prevent extra sperm from sticking to the outside of the egg and altering genetic results.
The Complete ICSI Procedure
From expert diagnostics to the delicate injection under the microscope, here is exactly what you can expect during your ICSI cycle at Genix Fertility.
Expert Consultation
The journey at Genix Fertility begins with an open discussion with our fertility specialist, followed by a thorough medical examination. Our embryologist will suggest the best available alternatives to address any specific sperm-related issues.
Ovarian Stimulation
On day 2 or 3 of the menstrual cycle, hormonal investigations and ultrasounds are conducted. The ovaries are stimulated with specialized medications for 8 to 12 days to grow follicles containing eggs, monitored closely via regular blood tests and scans.
Egg Collection
An injection is administered for the final maturation and loosening of the egg from the follicular wall. 34-36 hours later, egg retrieval is performed using ultrasound guidance under mild sedation to ensure a completely painless experience.
Sperm Collection & Prep
On the day of egg collection, a fresh semen sample is provided and meticulously processed by an embryologist in our ART lab. If required, sperm can also be safely extracted directly from the testicle or epididymis in a minor separate procedure.
ICSI & Embryo Transfer
A single, healthy sperm is injected directly into the egg. After evaluation in the laboratory, the finest developing embryos are chosen. Depending on their quality and growth, a preferable day is decided for the embryo transfer into the uterus.
After Transfer Support
Supportive medicines are prescribed post-transfer to optimally assist the embryo in implanting into the uterine lining. After a fixed, 14-day waiting period, official blood tests are conducted to confirm the pregnancy.
